Topic: ABIT's OTES Gives High-end Graphics Performacne on the Cheap
The Register is reporting that ABIT has a new video card coming out based on the GeForce4 Ti4200 chip that will have the ability offer the performance of the GeForce4 Ti4600 at a much lower cost. What's the secret? A new cooling system based on laptop cooling systems called OTES (Outside Thermal Exhaust System):
[urlquote=http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/3/27170.html]It uses a vacuum to seal the Ti4200 on a copper base, then a 7,200 rpm fan to cool the system. This of course just gives you a cooler card, so in order to actually deliver the extra performance Abit is shipping overclocking tools with it. There's one easy set intended to make it easier for normal people to mess with their settings, and the real stuff for the hard bastards.[/urlquote]
ABIT has some pictures on their site, but they're pretty low quality. For a better look at it, check out All About PC which is in German, but the curious can read the English translation by Google. It seems like a novel idea, the only oddity is that it takes up two phyiscal slots because it has a vent for the cooling. ABIT expects it to be available sometime in September with a street price of 150 in the UK, which translates to about $230 in the US, a damn sight cheaper than all Ti4600's current available at retail outlets.
If the performance is really up to snuff, it might be worth a look.
